Understanding Complicated Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are extremely common. More than half of women and about 12% of men will get at least one during their lifetime.
With such a large share of the population affected by this uncomfortable condition, it’s not surprising that researchers leapt into action and found an effective treatment. Today, UTIs can usually be cleared up with a short round of antibiotics.
Note that we said “usually.” In some instances, a UTI needs more involved care. In that case, it’s called a complicated urinary tract infection.
At SmartClinic Urgent Care, we can help. As specialists in treating UTIs, our team works with you to figure out the complication and address it. You can make an appointment or walk into either of our locations — in Santa Clarita or West Covina, California — for help getting rid of your complicated UTI.
When UTIs get complicated
Because a UTI is a bacterial infection, the majority of cases can be cleared up with a few days of oral antibiotics. When the UTI doesn’t get better with the usual treatment, medical experts consider it complicated.
Usually, the complication comes from an underlying cause. You’re more likely to face this problem if you:
- Are diabetic
- Are pregnant
- Are resistant to antibiotics
- Get recurrent UTIs
- Have a catheter
- Have an obstruction in your urinary tract
- Have bladder problems
- Have permanent kidney damage
Our team can help you figure out what might be behind your complicated UTI. That way, we can create a treatment plan to best address the root cause and clear up the infection.
Successfully treating a complicated UTI
In many cases, treating your complicated UTI doesn’t mean a complicated treatment. Instead, it often means adjusting your antibiotics. We might prescribe a broad-spectrum antibiotic with a longer course — 10–14 days, for example. This more thorough antibacterial treatment often eliminates the infection.
You might also need targeted treatment to address the underlying cause of the UTI. If you have a blockage in your urinary tract, for instance, removing the blockage and taking an antibiotic usually resolves the infection. If a catheter is behind the issue, removing the catheter may be a key part of your treatment plan — along with antibiotics and more regular cleaning of future catheters.
Whatever’s behind your complicated UTI, we’re here to partner with you to fully resolve the infection. Our team continues working with you until we can effectively target and kill the bacteria causing your infection.
Whether you just developed a UTI or you already know it’s complicated, we can help. Contact the SmartClinic Urgent Care location convenient to you for an appointment. Or, if you’re ready to see us today, you can simply walk into either location for same-day care.
